N TO S CLARA

N to S Clara is a photographic series that was on display at the Hand Art Center from March 22, 2019 to April 5, 2019 as part of Platinum Collective, the Stetson University Class of 2019 Digital Arts Exhibition. The series was displayed in two 18x54 inch prints and in a photobook of 42 images.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I often bike down Clara Avenue to get to Edith I. Starke Elementary school, where I've volunteered regularly for the past three years. At State Road 44, North Clara Avenue turns into South Clara Avenue. Immediately past this dividing line, the landscape changes.

N to S Clara is a photographic study of a two-mile stretch of this road. Juxtaposing images of similar subjects from the north and south sides of Clara Avenue highlights the wealth inequality that exists in the DeLand area. When taking pictures for this series, I was careful to match the lighting and composition of each image as closely as I could manage, as not to introduce any non-inherent differences between subjects. The results of this study are presented in two diptych prints and in a photo book, with images from North Clara on the left-hand pages and images from South Clara on the right-hand pages.
